Eldridge and my father-in-law were very good friends and golfing buddies, spending countless hours on the golf course or in Acapulco at our condo. This friendship started at DCC and followed to Bent Tree and Gleneagles.
I know "The Captain" Charlie Seay is waiting at the first tee!

Eldridge,
Gave me a lot much deserved “grief” but never without a smile.
He taught me more things than I can remember and most of our laughs can’t be shared on this memorial page. I’d go for a lesson and my wife would be thankful I was headed to see my “therapist” E was such a “force of life” it’s hard for me to pull up one great thought without a 100. He was a true friend till the end. I miss him.

I worked a lot with E while he was at Bent Tree and GlenEagles. I collaborated with him on the development of the GlenEagles logo and embroidered his first marketing items for him.
He was always personable, easy going, kind and imaginative.
I am humbled to have known him.
Let the party in heaven begin!

When I was a very young girl, we visited Big E at Bent Tree Country Club. E’s kids, my cousins, were the envy of kids everywhere because they got to use the golf carts at will. Whether this was actually sanctioned by the Club or not is debatable.
One day, we’re hanging out and decided to take some carts out. We stopped for a bit on the trail to watch E giving a lesson to the entertainer, Jackie Gleason, a short distance away.
On the previous hole we had observed Mr, Gleason picking up his cocktail from the ground nearby then whipping out a lounge chair to wait for the other golfer’s to shoot. Thus, we rushed to the next hole to see if he would do it again.
Their carts pull up, Mr. Gleason has a confab with E, sets his cocktail on the ground and goes and takes his shot.
He watches it fly away then walks over and grabs his cocktail heading towards his lounge chair. As he plops into it, it goes flying backwards, him with it, cocktail firmly in hand.
Not a drop was spilled.
E was laughing so hard as he helped his friend up that he dropped him (cocktail still safely protected,) and fell over in the ground himself.
The two men just lay there a long time laughing...and not just any laugh mind you.
These were howling belly laughs punctuated with snort bursts through their noses with tears running down their faces.
That’s the kind of guy Eldridge was. He found the fun in life, everyday. He had a megawatt smile as big as Texas, and a heart that matched. It was a pure gift I got him as an uncle. Although his bright light may be gone from this world, it still shines white hot inside me.
As for me on that day, I’m not ashamed to tell you here that my cousins and I were laughing so hard that I peed my pants. Mama had to go get fresh clothes for me from the car, and I walked around the rest of the day in chagrin.
Good times.

Big E was, to say the least, a huge part of my life. Eldridge taught me to play golf at the age of 6...He was very influential in many young golfers. He gave me advice and helped with my career as PGA Professional. A funny fishing story...Eldridge took my Dad and I fishing on several occasions. One particular morning he made us close our eyes when we turned off the highway somewhere in east Texas so we wouldn't know exactly where is "secret" fishing hole was! Rest in peace my friend...You will be truly missed!

Ode to Big "E"
Do not grieve or lament for Big "E". He has had his day....and what a day it was! By any measure an outstanding life. His many extraordinary achievements were surpassed only by his numerous numerous friends and the love of his beautiful wife.
He was doing what he loved with those he loved. He was giving a lesson just 15 days before he "holed the final putt" of his earthly tour. Ben, Sam and Arnie have been waiting for an worthy 4th! Now he has arrived.
His was a path we all must travel; a journey that is oh so brief. "E" would likely urge us to "grind on every shot" everyday.
Farewell my friend..... until we meet again...

Elderidge or the "Big E" as everyone called him , and I met about 27 years ago. I moved to Texas with the JCPenney Company and was playing in an event and "E" was our pro. After the event he said I can help your game, even though you are a Yankee !!! So until he moved to California, he was my only instructor, and he insisted that you draw the ball, fades were NOT allowed. When he said I needed new clubs early on, he took me to the Hogan factory in Fort Worth to get fitted, and of course he knew all of those original guys there. What a day it was to hear the stories. I don't think I'll ever meet a kinder,or more generous man than Elderidge, and I am so happy to have had him in my life for all those years..

When he was head pro at Bent Tree, I was a junior player there. He was always kind and encouraging. When I was 14, I was out on the back nine walking on a hot summer afternoon. Mr. Miles came along in a cart and asked what I was out doing playing in the heat. I told him since Juniors couldn't start until 10am during the week, there wasn't much choice. He followed me on 16, then after I hit my tee shot on 17, he told me to come out and play at 8am. "Just wait till after the men tee off, and follow them. If anyone says anything to you, tell them I said it was ok." No one ever did say anything, and the men's group soon let me play with them after a week or two. He later told my Dad he wanted me to play with the men to see better players and competition.

Eldridge differed from other teaching pros by allowing friends that he knew and trusted to sit in on the lessons to other students and learn what he saw in students’ swings and how to fix it. He often told me “when they show up and start telling me about their problems my response is that I’ll give them five chances about the source and bet them 5 bucks all five will be wrong.” And he often did (in jest) and he was always right.
His lessons were always as much conversation as demonstration and he could teach more about a golf swing while seated in a lawn chair than many others could using videos of a student’s swing in a full lab environment while wearing a harness. And when he described Hogan’s approach and thought process it wasn’t from reading Ben’s books it was from direct face-to-face conversations playing and practicing with him in Ft Worth when E was attending TCU.
He once told me about playing a long 5-par hole with Ben, whereupon E pulled out a 3-wood for his second shot from a freshly-mown tight-lie fairway. Ben’s only comment was “I’ve never been good enough to hit that shot consistently so I never try it.” E admitted that he didn’t always listen but to his credit he got the message and hit the safe layup with an iron instead. Easy birdie vs. long-odds eagle. Didn’t see him as much the last couple of years but will never forget the good times and good teaching.

If you ever met BIG E you knew right way he was very special. If you loved golf you were his friend. I cherish those days having lunch at the round table at Gleneagles and then hitting balls all afternoon. I first met Big E when we both were invited to spend 3 days with Ben Hogan Mr. Hogan, Arnold Palmer Lee Trevino and countless famous people considered Bid E their friend. He was a wonderful teacher and player and way ahead of his time as a merchandiser. I can't help but smile thinking about all the stories he would tell. No one could hold court like Big E. I know he is in a great place and I'm sure Mr Hogan and Arnold greeted him and they are playing right now. Lets celebrate his life because he lived that way.
RIP my friend

The Big E gave me my first job in the golf business. While at Bent Tree CC I answered a phone call in the Pro Shop. The caller asked to speak to Eldridge. I asked if I could tell him who is calling. The caller said "Arnold Palmer." I walked into the Big E's office and informed him that some joker claiming to be Arnold Palmer was holding on line 1. 20 minutes later, I am cruising the parking lot in a golf car and who walks up? Yep. Arnie. Eldridge knew everybody in golf. Or maybe it's better said that they knew him. He was a PGA of America legend and rightfully so. I'm glad I had the opportunity to work and learn from him and to play golf with him. My condolences to his family.

“Big E” could always make me laugh .... even on a BAD golf day! During my lessons he would always tee up 1 ball at a time, UGH!! I would get bored and tee up 8 or 10, whack them then tee up 8 or 10 more. After a few lessons he decided we should be lunch buddies instead of Golf Instructor/Student. We had many fun lunches after that!!

Big E,
Taught me many lifelong lessons and we shared many a laugh. He, however taught me the difference between an “E” and an “Or”. As you remember, Eldridge always hit a draw. So, one day I was giving him a lesson and he wanted to hit a fade. We worked for about 20 minutes, and the shape of his shot started to go straight and just barely fall to the left. He said, “bob, look at that fade.” I said, Big E, that is still a slight draw. He snapped back immediately, and said,” do you know the difference between the E and the OR?I said no. He said “I am the employOR and you are the employEE”. I then said, “that’s a fade.”
Thanks Big E for your mentoring. I pray all golf holes in Heaven are dog-leg lefts. RIP
BOBBY WILSON
